About Wardell Picquet
Wardell Picquet is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. In his hometown he was a Fine Artist, Art Magazine Publisher, Graphic Designer, Public School Elementary Art Teacher and High School Graphics Instructor. Wardell graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana under the tutelage of the famous late New Orleanian Artist, John T. Scott. His degree was in Art and, uniquely, included multiple Areas of Concentration in Drawing, Graphic Design and Printmaking. Picquet, along with two partners, established and developed REDDOT, a Visual Arts Magazine in 2001. REDDOT was New Orleans’ first full-color Arts magazine, dedicated to the interests of Artists and Arts Organizations. He spent the five years prior to Hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans Public Schools system teaching Art to grades Pre-K to 6 and Special Ed and Graphic Design to high schoolers.
Wardell has lived in San Antonio, Texas since his displacement by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Here in San Antonio he has worked in the nonprofit Art sector with StoneMetal Press Printmaking Center and worked as an Art Instructor for the 21st Century Program under the Carver Community Cultural Center. He has spent time as a member of various Art Groups such as SAVA (San Antonio Visual Artists), SAEAS (San Antonio Ethnic Arts Society), Msanii Afro Centric Artist Collective, Gevers Street Studio and Art at the Jalapeno. For ten years, Wardell Picquet trained the next generation of Graphic Design professionals in his role as Full-time Graphic Design Instructor at Sanford Brown College - San Antonio (formerly IADT – San Antonio, the International Academy of Design and Technology). He has also taught Art workshops for the Education Department of the McNay Art Museum and Inspire Fine Art Community Center.
Picquet spent time as a Board member of the Carver Community Cultural Center, serving on the Marketing and PR Committee. Wardell also handled the Design and Marketing interests of the Event Committee of the Alamo City Black Chamber of Commerce. He currently serves as the Curator and Arts Community Liaison for SAEAS (San Antonio Ethnic Arts Society) and volunteers for the Communications/Public Relations Committee of SAAACAM (San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum).
Wardell’s professional interest is spending time on the development of his Art enterprise, Picquet Studios. Picquet Studios is dedicated to the production, instruction and promotion of Fine Art and Design. It is also interested in partnering with community and other business interests.
Picquet’s artistic interests include Drawing, Illustration, Painting, Collage, Mixed Media, Printmaking, Sculpture, Sequential Art and 3D Design. He likes dealing with color, pattern, texture, shape, contrast, abstraction and the overwhelming magnificence of the human form. Wardell continues his personal quest to blend all these Artistic pursuits into a cohesive and aesthetic whole.
